2027: Julius Abure Meets Wike in Abuja

The embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party, Bar. Julius Abure on Sunday met the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike in a closed door meeting in Abuja.

Special Adviser to the minister on Media and Publicity, Lere Olayinka confirmed the meeting in a post on his social media handles. Olayinka who did not give details of the meeting shared pictures of the two men in a warm handshake, smiling broadly to the camera.

The media space has been agog in recent times with news of political alignments and realignments, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reports in some quarters say the meeting was a desperate move by Abure to secure the attention of the president on the lingering leadership issues that has rocked the Labour Party.

Recall that a supreme Court judgment had asked the two factions of the Labour Party, LP, to settle the internal rift within them, as the court is not permitted to interfere with internal party affaires.

This judgement was received with mixed reactions and interpretations. While the Senator Nenadi Usman led Caretaker Committee of the party saw it as a justification for the setting up of the caretaker committee, spearheaded by the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti and the 2023 presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi.

On the other side, Julius Abure’s faction interpreted is a legal ground to remain in office, having secured victory in the same matter at the high court and the appeal court.

On the backdrop of the judgement, the Senator Nenadi Usman led Caretaker Committee, wrote the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to recognize the committee, though the electoral empire has not granted their request.

In a related development, the Julius Abure led faction of the party was recognized by INEC for the November 8 Anambra State gubernatorial election.

Tongues are wagging that the meeting Abure had with the president was to secure a move the attention of the president for his to be recognized as the authentic National Chairman of LP.

Also recall that Julius Abure led faction issued an ultimatum to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi to formally resign from the party or get an expulsion due to his romance with the coalition, which has adopted the African Democratic Congress as the party for the elections.
