Abia Govt Restates Commitment to Deaf Women’s Welfare … *Anyaele: We’ll Expand Jobs, Education and Sign-Language Services

The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the inclusion and empowerment of Deaf women in the state.

Chairman of the Abia State Disability Rights Commission, Dr. David Anyaele, gave the assurance Friday while receiving the South East Deaf Women Association, SEDWA, at the Government House, Umuahia.

Dr. Anyaele said Governor Alex Otti’s administration has already employed several Deaf women and will continue to prioritize qualified persons with disabilities for jobs and other support programmes, including interventions by the Governor’s wife, Lady Priscilla Otti.

He disclosed plans to upgrade the state’s secondary school for Deaf students with hostels, and to recruit sign-language interpreters to improve access to government services.

SEDWA South East Women Leader, Mrs. Maria Chidimma Alufo-Ekpo, requested more inclusion of Deaf women in agriculture and business empowerment schemes, and appealed for help to resolve internal disputes within the Deaf community.
