Governor Otti Rewards Woman For Helping Blind Husband Teach In A Secondary School

Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, in a heartwarming display of kindness and compassion, has granted waiver for the employment of Mrs. Akaniro Gethrude Chinyere, the wife of a blind teacher at Ozuitem Secondary School in Bende Local Government Area.

Mrs Akaniro has been working with her husband in the school on pro-bono basis and has demonstrated passion and commitment to the educational development of students in her community.

This was made public by the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Ụkọha Njọkụ Ụkọha in a statement on Friday, August 8, 2025.

According to Ụkọha, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education (Basic and Secondary), Sir Kenechukwu Nwosu, had on Sunday, August 3rd, presented Mrs. Chinyere with her appointment letter following the Governor’s gracious gesture.

The story of the dedicated blind teacher and his supportive wife had previously gone viral on social media space, prompting the Governor to instruct his Special Adviser, Sir Nwosu to visit the school and address the existing challenges.

The Governor’s intervention has had a transformative impact not only on Mrs. Chinyere and her husband lives, but also on Ozuitem people in Bende LGA, as well as the State’s Education sector. The recent recruitment of over 5,380 teachers has significantly enhanced teachers-students ratio in various schools including Ozuitem Secondary School to improved and boost the teaching of over 350 students in the school.

This gesture serves as a testament to His Excellency’s unwavering dedication to the welfare of Abians and his unrelenting commitment to improving the Education sector in the State.

The highly elated Mrs. Akaniro and her husband were overwhelmed with emotion, celebrating her new role and thanking the Governor for his kindness.
