Abia State Government Set To Release First Batch Of 20 Electric Buses

The Abia State Government is set to release the first batch of twenty electric buses as part of the ongoing efforts to revolutionize public transport system in the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Otti, Ụkọha Njọkụ Ụkọha disclosed this in a press statement made available to newsmen early Saturday morning, October 11, 2025

“Governor Otti’s administration is poised to revolutionise the public transport system with the scheduled launch of EV (Electric Vehicle) Public Transport System, a move that will position the State at the forefront of sustainable transportation in Nigeria.”

According to the release, the state plans to acquire one hundred 100 fleets of Electric buses to operate in the 3 major cities of Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia with terminals at different stages of construction.

The release noted that the first batch of 20 electric buses acquired by the State with 10 charging infrastructure equipped with persons with disability solutions will be operational before the end of the year. A second batch of the same quantity is expected to be delivered by early next year with an additional 10 charging infrastructure.

Njọkụ said the initiative is part of a broader and futuristic vision of His Excellency Dr Alex Otti for a modern and sustainable public transportation system, which aligns with global best practices, climate change and environmental sustainability goals, adding that the Governor has embraced the future over diesel, premium motor spirit and the compressed natural gas.

He added, “In Aba and Umuahia, modern bus stops are at the completion stages to provide comfortable and efficient transportation services to the public and routes are currently being finalised.”

“The State’s sustainable transport system project will reduce dependence on grid electricity by utilising solar power and battery storage, enhancing road safety and reducing accidents by having designated bus stops including creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth of the State.”
